VCUarts Qatar (http://www.qatar.vcu.edu/) seeks an art historian with specialization in the arts of any geographic area of the Ancient World to teach undergraduate courses in support of the program’s Bachelor of Arts in Art History curriculum. Scholars whose research and teaching focus on relationships between and among multiple regions are of particular interest.
This position is a 9-month non-tenure-eligible faculty position in the VCUarts Qatar Art History Program with an academic rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities include development and teaching of undergraduate courses in the Art History Program and across VCUarts Qatar in support of collaborative BA and BFA curriculum. Courses taught will include introductory surveys of World Art, as well as upper level art history courses in the faculty member’s area of specialization. Courses taught will change as demand requires, and will be at the discretion of the Program Director.
The faculty member is expected to provide leadership by mentoring students; fostering collaborative partnerships, curriculum, and research across Education City with university partners and Qatar Foundation Centers, as well as VCUarts and the broader VCU campus; secure external funding; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience, integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools; and generate national and international academic, community and scholarly partnerships, including relationships with museums in the Gulf region and those within the Qatar Museums organization (http://www.qm.org.qa/en).
The faculty member’s creative and research activity should make a significant contribution to a body of knowledge within the discipline of art history and reflect a high standard of quality. The faculty member must demonstrate an active professional career and scholarly activities should be related to the program’s curriculum and be consistent with and support the broader mission and initiatives of the department, School, and University. As a member of a community-oriented, tight-knit department and School, the faculty member will provide service to the department and School, such as serving as a peer reviewer, organizer of conferences and/or conference sessions, member of professional associations and/or providing professional service; directing and assisting with student, department and school-wide related activities; serving as an academic advisor; facilitation of student activities exhibitions; developing and fostering student internships; serving on School/University committees; and other duties as assigned.
•PhD in Art History or a related field.
•Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience teaching at an undergraduate level English-language university setting is required.
•A well-developed scholarly portfolio in area of specialization with the potential for multi-disciplinary applications and interest in developing external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
•Must possess excellent verbal and written English, as all courses are taught in English.
•Must have strong collaboration skills and demonstrate enthusiasm toward teaching and interacting within in a multicultural environment as a faculty member at VCUarts Qatar.
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCUarts Qatar.
•Grounding in current theoretical and methodological discourses, preferred.
•Interest in engaging the history of the Gulf region and art collections in Qatar and the surrounding area, preferred.
