The Centre for Classical Studies (CEC) of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) calls for applications for 2 (two) PhD Research Scholarships. Candidates should be already admitted and enrolled in the doctoral program in Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon or be admitted and enrolled to begin the PhD program in the second semester of the academic year 2020/21 (that is, candidates who apply to the PhD program in Classical Studies before 31 October 2020 and are admitted before 15 November 2020).
PHD RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS
The grants are awarded for a period of one year and are renewable up to a total of four years. The work must take place entirely in the CEC of the University of Lisbon, though it may include a short stay abroad (up to one semester) for relevant research activities.
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates for these research scholarships must satisfy the following conditions:
1. They must be students who have already been admitted and enrolled in the PhD program in Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon (or students who have been admitted and are enrolled to begin the PhD program in the second semester of the academic year 2020/21). In other words, candidates for these scholarships have have applied for for admission before October 2020 and admitted to the PhD program before 15 November 2020.
2. They should be holders of a BA and/or MA degree in Classical Studies or in a cognate area that has provided suitable preparation to carry out research toward a PhD in Classical Studies.
4. They should reside habitually in Portugal;
5. They should not have held any prior FCT-funded PhD or been the beneficiary of a PhD scholarship in an organization directly funded by the FCT.
APPLICATIONS
Applications must be submitted between 26 October and 22 November 2020. Applications must be written in Portuguese or English and submitted via e-mail to the following address: centro.classicos@letras.
Applications should include the following documents:
1. Details included on your identity card, citizen card, or passport.
2. A full curriculum vitae.
3. Certificates of all academic qualifications obtained on which the applicant intends to base their application, with a final average, and, if possible, grades of all subjects taken, or, alternatively, a declaration from the candidate that they will be awarded a relevant academic degree before the deadline for the submission of applications.
4. Registration of recognition of the academic degree(s) and diploma(s) awarded by foreign higher education institutions, registration of the conversion of the final classification for the Portuguese classification scale or, alternatively, a declaration from the candidate that they will obtain the recognition of the relevant academic degree before the deadline for the submission of applications.
5. A letter explaining the candidate’s interest in conducting research leading to the completion of a PhD program in Classical Studies and factors in her or his academic background that support this expression of interest (1,000-1,500 words).
6. Two letters of recommendation.
7. A description of the research project that the candidate plans to develop, including a timeline (3,000 5,000 words).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT APPLICATIONS
The submission of an application for an individual PhD Research Scholarship does not exempt the applicant from the submission of an application to the PhD program in Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon in the case of applicants who are not already enrolled.
RESEARCH PROJECT AND SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION
1. The PhD program in Classical Studies of the School of Humanities of the University of Lisbon is a cycle of studies with 240 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) that includes a first year with four seminars and three years for the completion of the thesis. In the first year, scholarship holders will be supervised by the Director of Studies and/or by tutors. From the beginning of the second year, scholarship holders are supervised by their PhD supervisor.
2. Scholarship holders must integrate one of the following High Potential Research Teams (HPRTs) of the CEC:
(a.) 1. Classical Texts and Transmission (current themes: Greek mythography and Flavian poetry).
(b.) 3. Epigraphica: Iberian Texts, Languages and Cultures.
(c.) 4. Medievalia: Late Antique and Medieval Historiography, Hagiography and Documentation.
(d.) 6. Humanistica: Humanism and Literature in Portugal;
(e.) 9. Portuguese Women Writers and the Classics.
(f.) 10. What Stage for the Classics? Classics, Translation and Performance in the 20th Century in Portugal.
3. In the description of their research project, applicants should indicate the HPRT that they wish to be involved with, include a brief account of the state of research in their area of investigation, justify the relevance of the proposed research activities, provide a list of relevant sources and bibliography, explain how the proposed research activities align with the objectives of the HPRT and the CEC, and attach a timeline. Candidates may include further information that they consider relevant for the application.
